Kanae Fukuhara from Japan was a visitor this month. She said our BNI group was a lot funnier than the one in Japan. We laughed and had fun as we did business.

Mike Benzenhoefer of Ribbon Recyclers is sitting next to Todd Smith of Alltel. Our chapter started a mentoring program this year. There are about a dozen mentors and mentorees. Mike announced that he is getting married.

Pat Taviss of Pat Taviss Consulting and VP did her " waving the wand" on Brian Flahive of Orkin. Our newest member.

April 9, 2008 was the BNI Open House launching this year's membership drive. Our booth, shown in the photograph above, had a cash register showing all the moneys transferred through our chapter last year: $2,464,754 (in only a 9 month period!).

On March 13, Todd Smith of Alltel joined our chapter.

Advanced MSP -

is being taught by Michelle Martin of Martin Insurance Consultants

The topic of this Thursday's interactive workshop is "Dance Cards" (or "One To One's"). The workshop will focus on the importance of Dance Cards in getting to know other BNI Chapter members as well as proven techniques for improving the conversations you have during your Dance Card meetings. The result? Referrals that are both more numerous and of higher quality for you and your "dance partner."

Dinner at the workshop is optional. You can order your own dinner from the snack bar or order pizza to share through Michelle. The pizza to share is $3; to order it, email michelle@martininsuranceconsultants.comand let her know your choice of Pepperoni & Mushroom or Sausage & Black Olive. Alternatively, you can put your order in the "comments" section of the on-line registration. Michelle will collect the $3 at the meeting.

The workshop is this Thursday, April 24, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at Varsity Clubs of America, 3855 E. Speedway Blvd., NW corner of Speedway and Alvernon

Hello, Susan Fulton of Desert Penguin! Joy Douglas of Mustard Seed Art is the new photographer in our group. She is the one taking pictures during our meeting. I will mark her pictures with a ** so everyone will know what good work she does.

Chris Litten, BS of Body Basics was our second speaker. We found out that besides being a Personal Trainer he is also a nutritionist. His door prize was a shirt that was won by Christy of the Foothills Chapter. Chris also gave away an hour session at Body Basics and Nancy Jones of Premier Design was the lucky winner.

By now you all recognize Mary Gibson of Sonoran Bed & Breakfast. She is one of the event coordinators who help plan our monthly mixer. This month we went to Michelangelo Ristorante Italiano! BEST GIVERS GAIN PROJECT

Our Chapter decided to help Mary Gibson of The Sonoran Bed & Breakfast to achieve their 5 year goal in a shorter time frame. We all pitched in with ideas, elbow grease and brain power to help the project grow. We decided that every six months a business from our group would be selected to give them a boost with all our expertise. This has been fun and work as we work together as a team to help one of our members.

When our members heard another Chapter was losing members, we invited them to visit our chapter to see if we could help them. We took potential guest to their chapter and help them get back on track. Our chapter included them in our mixers and have enjoyed getting to know our "relatives."

In March, Bob Hollingshead of Pre-Paid Legal came up with the idea of a 50/50 drawing. Members had the option of buying raffle tickets for $1 apiece; 6 for $5 or 15 for $10. The person with the lucky ticket would get to draw a card from a deck of cards. That card would indicate the amount of money they would win. If the person drew the Joker they would win one half of the pot. When a card was drawn it was torn up. As the weeks went buy the pot got very large! During the 40 week period (before the Joker was drawn) $273 was given out and the Jackpot was drawn on 12/12/07 and was worth $1560. The Chapter's share went towards our Christmas Party. The party was catered, had door prizes, gift exchange and dance instruction.

On 3/8, Lindsey Richter of BGR Financial Group was our first winner of $2.

Mike Benzenhoefer of Ribbon Recyclers won $6 on 4/5;won $4 on 5/10; $2 on 8/16; $10 on 10/4; $10 on 10/25; and $2 on 11/8 for a total of 34. So looks like Tye was the second runner up for most monies won...........

Peggy Hyde of Arizona Holistic Hypnosis won $9 on 3/22;$8 on 10/18 and the Grand Prize of $1560 on 12/12! For a total of $1577. When she drew the winning ticket she also pulled out three other tickets and payed for their monthly dues. The winners of those tickets were Paul Sandoval of Paul's Auto Repair (he won twice) and Mike Benzenhoefer of Ribbon Recyclers.

Cordless Microphone... It is easier for the back of the room to hear what is being said

Meeting Description...each visitor is handed a sheet explaining what happens during the meeting

Mentoring Members...new member are mentored by their sponsoring members.

Send Out Cards...Each visitor receives a card thanking them for coming.

Sign...we have a nice sign printed by Speedway Signs that is placed by the door to show people where we meet.

Brochure...Every 6 months we have a printed brochure for everyone to use and hand out. They are free to the members.

Name Tags..We have nice big easy to read name tags..

Business Card Packets...Each visitor gets a complete set of business cards of all our members

Gift Bags...Members can better advertise their business to visitors by giving away promotional items.

Speed Dancing...allows members to meet more members than the usual dance cards. This we do during our monthly mixer.

Raffle...has increased our slush fund several times over to afford our brochures, Christmas Party and many extras.

Timing Lights...used to time commercials and speakers.

Blog...Newsletter, longer testimonials and allows leadership to post informative articles to our members and the world!!

Photographer....hoots pictures during meeting to be used in the blog and newsletter

Large Business Card Holder...We give them away as incentive to new members to attend MSP within their first 30 days.

Our Holiday Party will be Dec. 15 from 7pm-11pm. Sign up sheet will be available this Thursday. The party will be at Larry & Lori Stinson's home. The tickets will be $15 per person paid by Dec. 6. After that tickets will cost $20 a person. Please put Holiday Party on the checks. This will be an adult party, holiday attire. A buffet dinner will be served, and BYOB with your mixers.

Dianne Kelley of Sandbrook Business Benefits Group gave her demonstration last week. Her door prize was a massage from Massage Envy, and Michelle Martin of Martin Insurance Consultants name was picked for that.

Eric Robbins of Free Trade Auctions was the other presenter, and his door prize was a beautiful Oriental Bowl won by Peggy Hyde of Arizona Holistic Hypnosis.

Two year ribbons were given to Eric Shedd of Drylands Yardscapes and Rich Flieger of Computer Renaissance.

Travis Williams received his 5 yr ribbon.

Sue Zepeda has been a resident of Tucson since August 1998 and opened her company, We Organize it! four years ago this January.

She has been in the process of expanding her business and organizing services, and is pleased to announce that she now has a new business name: Within Reach Organizing Solutions.

Along with her new business partner, Cathie Parks, Sue also offers unpacking and home set-up services, Senior Move Management, downsizing and estate services and complete home organization for the totally overwhelmed.

Sue spent five years as a single mother after her first husband left, raising her son Brandon, now 24, before marrying her current love in 1988. They have been married 19 years and have three children together: Philip, Linnea and Jeremiah: 16, 15 and 12, respectively.

Sue’s family enjoys the company of their two Lab mixes, Fresca and Tisne; however, Sue mostly doesn’t enjoy the company of their four birds: two parakeets, a cockatoo named Lucy and an Indian Ringneck named Sunny.

Sue loves dancing and playing ping pong - and she can still give the best a good run for their money!

Something nobody knows about Sue is that she home schooled her children for five years, from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Sue’s key to success is loving God and doing her best to always serve others and helping them to achieve their own success.

Larry Stinson of DollarWorks LLC is this weeks speaker

Larry Stinson has been in business for 2 years as a publisher. He moved his wife Lori and three children to Oro Valley 10 years ago. His children are Bryan 24, Jason 21 and Erin 14. They have a black lab named Brandy along with George & Buddy their cats.

Larry loves to go camping and traveling. His burning desire is to become a well known regional Publisher.

Something no one here knows about him is he is one of seven kids and all of their names rhyme ... Carrie, Larry, Sheri, Geri, Teri, Meri, and Gary. (I can just hear his mom getting tongue tied on those names when she would get mad)

Susan Fulton of Desert Penguin Custom Framing is our other speaker this week

Susan Fulton has owned and operated Desert Penguin Custom Framing (with her business partner, Bunkii Trowbridge) for the past four years. The business started in a small garage space in Catalina, but soon moved down the street to a retail location.

Custom Framing was a new venture for Susan, who spent many years in the food service industry as well as the accounting/tax field. After spending 12 years on a thirty foot sailboat in the Sea of Cortez, Susan and her husband (yes, they stayed married through that experience!) relocated to Tucson on a whim. Susan tends to be a person given to extremes so the change from ocean to desert was not out of character. Upon looking for a new occupation, she found the framing business to be an opportunity to discover the creative side of her personality which had been dormant for 50 years.

Susan now enjoys hiking, bowling, reading, cooking and eating, and watching football. This year she has begun playing Fantasy Football for the first time. Contrary to what you might think, it is a complicated and challenging pastime. She still finds time to indulge her passion for researching historical polar exploration and has been on a three week trip to Antarctica. Her burning desire is to return to Antarctica, as well as visit the Arctic region. (Marjorie, there is something wrong with that sentence!)

Susan and her husband, Bill, have two cats named Spinky and Edith. Something no one knows about her is that she was once a champion Jacks player.

Monthly Mixer...second Friday of the month...October 12. We will be back at the Fox and Hound this Friday at 6pm-??? We are going to try something a little bit different this month - "Speed Dancing". We will set aside a half hour when we will each sit down for 10 minutes with three different partners and do a one-on-one dance card. So we will each count three dance cards for the mixer, rather than counting one for everyone that attended. Sounds like fun and a good way to have a slightly more in depth visit with three people that we may not know as well as we could. See you at the Fox & Hound Friday. There will be a charge of $5 that will be added to your monthly breakfast due bill.

MIKE BENZENHOEFER OF RIBBON RECYCLERS ETC. IS THIS WEEKS PRESENTER.

Mike Benzenhoefer started Ribbon Recyclers Etc. in March of 1995 with the intent of tapping into a share of the printer ribbon market by reloaded ribbon cartridges with new ribbon to save consumers money. This grew with the changing industry into filling ink cartridges and selling laser toner cartridges. A natural progression was to repairing printers with Mike's natural ability and interest in fixing things. The company became certified by Hewlett Packard in 2001 for reselling and repairs.

Mike now sell supplies for EVERYTHING that prints, copies or faxes and repairs most of the machines too. The product offering includes NEW, recycled, and compatible products. The intent is still to save you money but to also make your printing easy by offering delivery and support that you won't find with other vendors.

What makes Mikes' business different is the quality of the recycled products and the support behind the sale. Mike and his staff are there to answer your questions when you printer will not cooperate, and if needed can fix your printer with no charge for an estimate. If your printer can't be fixed, he will advise you about what printer you should, and more importantly, SHOULDN'T buy.

Mike's previous jobs include Short Order Cook, Chef (yea, a step up), Pirate actor, Utility Line Locating Contractor, and Regional Manager (4 states!) for an engineering firm.

Mike has one ex-spouse, is a single Dad the majority of custody time with 2 kids, Jacob 8, and Jessica 12. He has been in Southern Arizona since 1968 and Tucson since 1978. He loves it here and would not want to live anywhere else.

Mike loves to fish and does so at least once every two years or so.

At this time the competition is killing Ribbon Recyclers Etc. Mike is hopeful that BNI will continue to help his business while he changes his strategies and focus to build his business back up to where it once was.

Rachel Gioannini opened Casa Serena Landscape Designs in July of 2005. She is a certified landscape designer. Prior to this career shift, she has been a production manager, stage manager, college professor, lighting designer, volunteer coordinator, administrative assistant, barista, drug courier (nothing illegal), and bike guide. She’s lived in 11 states and has a BFA in technical theatre and an MFA in stage management.

Rachel and her husband, Pat, will celebrate their 5 year anniversary on 10/5. They met on the Internet shortly after Rachel moved here in 2000. They have 2 dogs, 3 cats and a turtle.

Rachel’s company has tripled it’s revenue this year so far and she plans to double her income next year. She is the sole owner and employee of her company and plans to stay that way. Her goal is to be paying the mortgage on their retirement home by 2009, assuming they find the right place. They are looking in the Silver City, NM area.

Rachel’s avocation is cycling and she is on the Summit Velo Racing Team. Her life has changed dramatically since she moved to Tucson. Her key to success is to remind herself nearly daily to be grateful and enjoy life, because it is the life she asked for. Something you don’t know about Rachel is she is also a quilter. One of her burning desires is to hike the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada.

BNI - THE FINAL FRONTIER.................. These are the voyages of the Northwest Chapter

Our Continuing Mission: To explore new business and networking strategies, To seek out new members wherever we may find them, and to Boldly go where no chapter has been before!

With apologies to Gene Roddenberry, The Star Trek mantra seems to be pretty appropriate for our chapter. Not only are we on the verge of becoming the largest BNI chapter in the world, we are also initiating a bold new Givers Gain Project.

What is this project? In a nutshell, we will pick one business from our chapter for this project every six months. During this six month period the business will receive all of the combined energies, expertise and creative ideas of their fellow members. We will all pitch in and help the recipient get to the next level by working together as individuals and as Power Teams. Your contribution to the project can be almost anything - reduced rate services from YOUR business, donated time and/or materials, or just some old fashioned elbow grease.

The first project target is The Sonoran Bed and Breakfast owned by Mary and Michael Gibson. James Craig, our business advisor, has donated his services to help the Gibsons target areas for growth and will be coordinating our chapter members to see the project to completion. Larry Stinson will be documenting the project in his new magazine, 520 , by writing a three part series of articles. Every business in the chapter is eligible to be a recipient of the Givers Gain Project provided they have participated in prior projects.

We will be meeting at the Sonoran Bed and Breakfast for a planning session on Friday, September 21 at 6pm. Mary and Michael will be serving a BBQ for our enjoyment and based on the reports I have been hearing, this will be a meal to remember. This project is a tremendous opportunity for us as a chapter to work together and also to set a new standard for other chapters. Nothing like this has been done in BNI before so I'm sure we will be the focus of some international attention.

You don't want to miss this truly innovative gathering. Please RSVP to me so the Gibsons can plan their meal accordingly.

What does a copy editor do, anyway?!
Since a lot of people seem kind of mystified about about this question, I want to use the blog and my five-minute presentation to get start demystifying things . We all now how fast 5 minutes goes, so I want to get a head start here in the blog. Here we go:

It is my job as copy editor to oversee every piece of writing that goes out of your office .

What kind of writing would this be?

Anything leaving your office containing the written word: letters, brochures, announcements, presentations, reports…important school papers or even dissertations…books…magazine or journal articles…grants… If you use written English, you need a copy editor!

The oversight I give to every piece of writing going out of your office makes sure that each piece has 3 crucial qualities:

It is CLEAR : there is no doubt in any one's mind about what you are trying to communicate to your clients.

It is CORRECT : there are no mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation, typos.paragraphs and are not buried where your message is hidden or minimized.

It is POWERFUL: your most important message comes through loud and clear and is not hushed up or minimized by placement in the weakest point of a sentence, paragraph, or entire set of paragraphs.
If there is any doubt in your mind as to whether or not something as "trivial" as punctuation really makes a difference, try figuring out the various meanings of the following sentences, taken from Lynne Truss' bestseller, Eats, Shoots and Leaves:
1. Leonara walked on her head, a little higher than usual.
2. The driver managed to escape from the vehicle before it sank and swam to the river bank.
3. The convict said the judge is mad.

Previous jobs: Mostly teaching English…6th grade through adults; city, town, and country; tiny rural colleges to sprawling universities.
Family: Divorced -2 children--Anna, 31, an M.D. in the Emergency Department of UMC and the first person to hold their Sports Medicine Fellowship; and Michael, 27, UA graduate in business,but not cut out for business--currently in Chicago and keeping a roof over his head while he decides what he wants to be when he grows up.

Animals-2 1/2 year old cat named Butterscotch; much loved; adorable; and definitely queen of the realm since she ran off a second cat I attempted to adopt.

Hobbies and Activities: Reading (especially Anne Tyler); movies (especially musicals like "Hairspray"); reality TV ("The Apprentice"); expensive restaurants. (When I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until it goes away)

City of Residence: Tucson, for almost 20 years…that makes me a native, right?
My burning desire: to be rescued by a knight in shining armor and live happily eve after…oh wait: that is sooo 1950's. Let's get back to the future--to be known as the best copy editor in the Tucson area.

Something no one knows about me: I was painfully shy as a child…all my teachers wrote on my report cards that I should speak up in class more…but you can see what happened: now I am making up for lost time!

My key to success…remains to be found! But I do think it resides somewhere in James Craig's tag line (a little free advertising for you, James!): you have to dream, plan, and act before you can succeed. I have lots of work to do on the planning and acting parts!

President Michelle Martin of Martin Insurance Consultants announced to the group her Givers Gain Project - purpose - to give back to our community or "Pay It Forward:" - rather than selecting a nonprofit organization, our Givers Gain project allows each chapter member as individuals, as well as Power Teams, to focus their creative ideas, expertise, combined energies and efforts on one specific business of our chapter every six months. With all of us pitching in to help a member business succeed or get to the next level, we will grow as individuals, our relationships as a business sales force will become stronger, and our Power Teams and CHAPTER will achieve success. Our business advisor is donating his time to help coordinate our 60+ volunteers and reduced rate member professionals to see this project through. And every business in the chapter is eligible to be a recipient of the focused six month Givers Gain project provided they have participated in the prior projects. Nothing of this magnitude has ever been attempted before.

Monthly Mixer...second Friday of the month...September 14. We will be back at the Fox and Hound this Friday at 6pm-??? We are going to try something a little bit different this month - "Speed Dancing". We will set aside a half hour when we will each sit down for 10 minutes with three different partners and do a one-on-one dance card. So we will each count three dance cards for the mixer, rather than counting one for everyone that attended. Sounds like fun and a good way to have a slightly more in depth visit with three people that we may not know as well as we could. See you at the Fox & Hound Friday. There will be a charge of $5 that will be added to your monthly breakfast due bill.

NW Chapter Homework - This is it! We will be having our contest on Memory Hooks!! On Sept. 13th There Will Be a Contest! Jessei is a Private Investigator for 4years but her business was established in 1979. She has had 15 years in education, 3 years in the legal field and 5 years in Human Resources. She has lived in Tucson for over 30 years.

She is married to John MacIntire and they have three sons and one daughter. Jason 21, John III 15, Jordon 14 and Samantha is 13. Their dog homer, cat Max share the house with a rabbit Mr Rubert and a 4 foot green iguana named Thor.

Jessei like Tae Kwondo; camping, horseback riding, scuba diving, and traveling. She loves to do surveillance and undercover. "Pretending to be someone else is fun"

Her burning desire is to travel more and someday write a book....Jessei do it instead of saying "someday".

Hello to the BEST BNI Chapter - IN THE WORLD!!

Last week we learned that the Platinum Chapter (they meet at Macayos at 11:30a on Thursdays) could use a good dose of Positive Energy. Their membership has slowly been reduced to 14 members. In speaking with Noel, their President, they seem to have a brighter future on the horizon with the new leadership team coming in, but could still use a shot of enthusiasm and some good ol' fashioned Givers Gain positive energy ......and a few more members!

So, WE invited all of their chapter members to join us for Breakfast this Thursday! There should be 6-7 of them in attendance. Please give them a warm welcome and introduce them to our many members! We are reserving some of the "inside seats" of the U for them. Larry will have signs taped to those chairs.

However, WE want to go above and beyond the call of duty!! I've attached a list of the other categories that seem to work for lunch chapters and included a few that I thought we could fill. I'm asking you to think of anyone in these categories or other businesses that might be interested in joining a lunch BNI chapter - and WE will introduce them to the Platinum Chapter this Thursday. That's right. We will attend their luncheon (pay for our own lunch) and introduce our guest. Now I know that we're in the middle of our own Membership Contest, but Noel's chapter is looking for duplicates of all of our members with only 14 exceptions! So if we have a buddy in the same business we're in or someone that has young children that can't make our morning meetings that would consider a lunch chapter ....that's who you should be introducing to the Platinum Chapter. For example, they don't have a photographer, accountant, business coach, advertising person, printer, organizer, home stager, handy-man, etc ....just to name a few. If we just added those categories alone, that would get them back to 20!!!

You all are an amazing group of people and I know that as a TEAM we can help this chapter get back some of their spunk by adding a few more members! We will continue to actively introduce prospective members to the Platinum Chapter through the month of Sept.

For a couple weeks, I have been trying to get a cartoon in here....no luck!!

WE ARE Comin' 2 by 2!!!!

Our "Comin' 2 by 2" Membership Contest started Aug. 2nd and you guys are just AWESOME!! The only reason we may say no to the Carbs is 'cause we're a lean and mean BNI Machine and we don't want anything to weigh us down! We had 3 visitors on Aug. 2nd, 5 visitors on Aug. 9th, 5 visitors on Aug 16th, and last week you guys just kicked it into HIGH Gear and we had 11 visitors on the 23rd!!! That's Awesome!!

Updated Goal: To be the LARGEST CHAPTER IN THE WORLD by September 27th!

The largest chapter is currently at 75 members and we currently have 58 members, but have 2 members to induct on Thursday.....so we've only got 16 more to go!!! Not sure who to invite? --- just look at the cheat sheet attached .... or ....find another business that could stand to jump start their Word of Mouth marketing plan!

Monthly Mixer...second Friday of the month... We went to the Fox and Hound this month and even though it rained like crazy we had a nice turn out. "Speed Dancing" We set aside a half hour where we sat down for 10 minutes with three different partners and did a one-on-one dance card. So we each count a dance card for the each speed dancing counting one for everyone that attended. We had lots of fun doing this and will continue this practise. There will be a charge of $5 that will be added to your monthly breakfast due bill for attending this mixer.

Membership Contest to begin Aug. 2nd The contest will run from Aug. 2 to Sept 27th. The target businesses named earlier that morning will be the focus. HINT...HINT…..do your power team homework! The goal is to be at 70 members when this Leadership Team hands the reigns over to the new Leadership Team in October! Winner will be announced at Oct. 4th meeting. Prize: One night stay at The Sonoran Bed & Breakfast! We are currently at 63 members!!

THREE THINGS to focus on during your 30 second commercial: Your Name, Business Name, Memory Hook!! .....and keeping your commercial to 30 seconds. It seems like the same people go over time each week, so please time your commercial. If you are having trouble, ask your mentor or a member of the leadership team for help. We are there to help you.

GIFT BAGS: Don’t forget to BRING YOUR GOODIES for the gift bags. We are giving them out to visitors. These bags will have all of the stuff you donate plus your business cards. Please make sure you bring lots of business cards to keep your slot filled up. If no cards, no free advertising… Business cards are your cheapest form of advertising.

50/50 DRAWING is up to $877.00!! Right now the joker is worth $439.00 Don’t forget to buy your tickets and make the joker worth a lot more. Dollar gets you one; $5 gets you 6 and $10 gets you 15 tickets. So clean out your pockets, purses and check the couch for some ticket money. Last week was the biggest increase in the pot....$101 collected.

We thank you for getting up so early and for filling in for our members, but in the interest of time, our substitutes will no longer be allowed to give their 30 second commercial.
